About UNISA

“Towards the African university in the service of humanity”

Founded in 1873 as the University of the Cape of Good Hope, the University of South Africa (UNISA) spent most of its early history as an incubator from which most other universities in South Africa have descended. In 1946, it was given a new role as a distance education institution and, as such, it remained multi-racial during the years of apartheid. UNISA received its current structure during the reorganisation of the South African academic system from 1994 to 2004.
As a leading distance-learning institution, UNISA is active throughout South Africa and in many African countries. It comprises more that 200,000 students distributed in five Colleges: Agriculture and Environmental Sciences; Economic and Management Sciences; Human Sciences; Law; Science, Engineering and Technology.

UNISA’s vision is to become Africa’s premier distance education provider, serving every country on the continent and transcending language and cultural barriers. By forming partnerships in Africa and throughout the world, UNISA wants to be able to help the people of Africa achieve their dreams. CIES signed a partnership agreement with UNISA in January 2007.
